CHARLES LANE AT OCs EDINBURGH & SHEFFIELD

As part of the national Scalarama alternative film festival, rediscovered 80s black-and-white classic Sidewalk Stories was screened at Open Cinemas in Dublin, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Sheffield. At the latter two cinemas, director and star of the film Charles Lane appeared via video link from New York for a Q&Afollowing the screenings, and enthralled members with stories of the challenges and joys of making the film by hand on the streets of a fast-changing decade.

Brendan Galvin at OC Edinburgh

Earlier in June, distinguished Irish cinematographer Brendan Galvin ISC spoke with members at Open Cinema Edinburgh, live from the set of his new film in Prague, about his work on the movie Escape Plan, starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Brendan told us, "I was pleased to be asked. They were a very enthusiastic and cheerful bunch. I would do it again anytime."

CULTURE MINISTER AT OPEN UNIVERSITY CINEMA

 

The Rt Hon Ed Vaizey MP, minister of state for culture, communications and the creatve industries, attended the end-of-season gala of the second Open University Cinema, (after OC SIFA Fireside), on 1 July 2013.

Also there for the panel discussion after a screening of "Marley" was the film's Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald, the OU's head of widening participation Michala Robertson and Crisis director of policy (and reggae expert!) Duncan Shrubsole.

The minister distributed OU/OC certificates of achievement, Michala offered OU fellowships to film club members, and Kevin offered work as extras on his new film, Black Sea. You don't get that at your local fleapit!

Dr KASIA BODDY is Skyping-in for THE PRINCESS BRIDE Q&A October 5 @ The Chestnut Centre

Kasia has an MA in Philosophy and English from Edinburgh, and a PhD from Cambridge where she wrote a thesis on late twentieth-century American short fiction. She is a Senior Lecturer at UCL and contributes to the MA in Film Studies, as well as Issues in Modern Culture within English. She is an occasional reviewer for the Daily Telegraph.

KELLY-ANNE Barker joined us for a Q&A on THE PIRATES! IN AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS!

After completing her BA in Media Studies at Coventry University, Kelly-Anne began working as production assistant on feature films and commercials. In 2011 she joined the renowned Aardman Animations (Wallace & Grommit, Chicken Run), where she gained valuable skills in the animation library and model making departments.

Eron Main is the acting International Wheelchair Rugby Federation Secretary General. He has been involved in wheelchair rugby since 1993 and was present at all the major competitions (2002 World Championships, 2004 Canada Cup, 2004 Paralympics) featured in ''Murderball'' the film.

Kate Brown joined us in Birmingham to talk about her work as a Comic Artist 

With a background in small-press and web-comics, Kate Brown created the comic serial "The Spider Moon" for David Fickling's weekly children's comic, The DFC. The work was adapted into a theatrical work by Playbox Theatre in late 2009, and was nominated for the 2010 Northern Graphic Novel Award. In January 2010, Kate was awarded the Arts Foundation Graphic Novel Fellowship. She used the funding to self-publish her stand-alone work, Fish + Chocolate, which was subsequently picked up by SelfMadeHero for a wider release.

Q&A with BEN DAVIS, BSC (Cinematographer on KICK-ASS

Ben began his career at a young age, working as a clapper loader and focus puller for Samuelson's Camera House. He moved up the ranks and started shooting pop promo's as a cinematographer, before moving on to work on blockbusters such as Kick-AssHannibal RisingStardust and Layer Cake.
